Drop in the bank's file. Money does the filing.

No bank password, no aggregator. Download a file from your bank's website, drop it on Money, and it works out the account, skips what it already has, suggests categories and pairs up transfers. You check the few it isn't sure about.

The files it reads

  • OFX and QFX (Quicken, Web Connect or Money files): the best choice when your bank offers one, because the file says which account it's for and what the balance is.
  • CSV from any bank. Tell Money which column is which once; it remembers the layout for that account.
  • Statement PDFs, for banks with no download or for history older than the download goes back.
  • QIF from Quicken and Microsoft Money: bank, cash and card accounts, with categories and splits.
  • YNAB, Monarch and Mint exports, recognized by their columns, with no setup.

Several files at once is fine, and you can drag them straight onto Money. Not sure where your bank keeps its download? The bank guides show where to look.

What happens to each file

  • The right account. An OFX file's account number, a CSV's saved layout, or a QIF file's account name tells Money where it goes. If it can't tell, it asks once.
  • No duplicates. Rows it already has are hidden, even when files overlap.
  • Pending and scheduled payments match up. When the real rent payment arrives, it replaces the scheduled one rather than adding a second.
  • Categories suggested from your rules and from what you chose last time for that payee, with the reason shown.
  • Transfers paired. The $200 that left Checking and the $200 that reached Savings become one transfer.
  • A balance check. If the file states a balance and Money's differs, you'll see it straight away.

Needs review

Anything Money isn't sure about lands in Needs review: an uncategorized payee, a possible duplicate, a transfer without its other half. Work through it with the keyboard, one item at a time, and teach it a rule as you go.
